The Mars radiation story has been known since the 1960s when it was first figured out by NASA. People only assumed radiation was a problem. Shielding requirements are minor for such a mission, and they could be mostly accomplished simply by the bulk of the food, water, fuel, and spacecraft structure. A storm shelter is the only needed additional protection; a small tube with a layer of plastic over it.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense. For some reason this announcement stood out to me.
